Beyond Zero - Community - Episode 201607251700
25/07/2016Given the urgency of climate action we are looking at the roadblocks which are stopping us going full steam ahead.Senator Lee Rhiannon sees corruption from the fossil fuel industry sapping the vitality of our political process. Without their corrupting influence would our government be capable of delivering the rapid change we need?"If our politicians are serious about climate change, then they need to stop taking money from and giving money to the big polluters."We talk to Blair Palese about 350.org's Pollution Free Politics Campaign.Miriam Lyons and Nicky Ison are the authors of The Homegrown Power Plan. They drill down into policy depths where most of us would fear to go. They come up with some golden ideas to end energy poverty. They make it easy for us to see how to remove the roadblocks, ensuring new renewables aren’t held back by the legacy of a bygone era. The Day After Tomorrow
18/07/2016What impact will Climate Change have on thecurrent extreme shifts in global weather patterns? "This is the second year of extreme heat in southeast Asia...all this was predicted by recent studies. The same studies say it will get even hotter, for longer periods, as the decades progress." "...the poorest victims of this heat are the least responsible for global warming. The source of the pollution has been half a world away, where most of us live in fossil-powered luxury. But in a world connected by finance, trade, and airplanes, the blowback can travel back from half a world – from the steaming countries of India and Pakistan." Professors David Karoly and Will Steffen describe what scientists expect over the next decades as we fail to decrease carbon emissions.Dr Adil Najam, Pakistani expert on International Affairs takes us to Karachi’s most punishing heat waves and the climate refugees that are flocking away from unlivable conditions.

Beyond Zero - Community - Episode 201607111700
11/07/2016In conversation with Per Espen Stoknes, Lyn Bender, Susie Burke, with Vivien Langford."The more facts that pile up about global warming, the greater the resistance to them grows, making it harder to enact measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare communities for the inevitable change ahead." "It is a catch-22 that starts, says psychologist and economist Per Espen Stoknes, from an inadequate understanding of the way most humans think, act, and live in the world around them. With dozens of examples—from the private sector to government agencies—Stoknes shows how to retell the story of climate change and, at the same time, create positive, meaningful actions that can be supported even by deniers."

There is no better time to bend their ears than when their jobs are on the line. Yes, it's election time. Get on the phone or online and make this an election issue.

The Race to 100% Renewables
21/03/2016Can we get there by incremental steps or should we go the whole hog?The Great debate from Sustainable Living FestivalAs climate change poses an existential threat, Cam Walker (Friends of the Earth) argues we need to engage everyone. People start with the incremental steps building community consensus then go the whole hog of shutting down coal fired power and installing bold new solar power with storage. The people at Port Augusta in S.A are shining the way and Cam describes how communities move mountains.Craig Wilkins from Conservation Council of South Australia, tells how renewable ownership radicalises people. BZE's Miwa Tominaga reveals how volunteers work together on no compromise plans that become the norm in no time. Cassy O'Connor and Senator Janet Rice explain how the race to get 100% renewables is being fought in parliament.MC: Miriam Lyons - GetUp!’s Senior CampaignerGuests:Cassy O’Connor - former Tasmanian Minister for Climate ChangeCraig Wilkins - Chief Executive, Conservation SAMi

Does Energy Efficiency Mean Living in a Cave?
14/03/2016In this episode, Viv asks - How do other countries get citizens to use less energy? Martina Blum: explaining how the citizens of Zurich voted to lower their electricity usage to 2000 watts per person each year. Now they are getting behind government spending on public transport and a massive renovation of buildings. Electricity companies in the country are required to buy produced surplus energy for four times the price that they are selling it for. This policy makes it possible to design buildings that make money for their owners. Verena Streitferdt (UTS): talks about Thailand and its innovative financing that gives an incentive to insulate and replace carbon intensive machinery. Although most countries efficiencies are motivated by the high costs of importing fuel, Australia can learn a lot about a new attitude to energy according to Verena Streitferdt and A/Professor Alistair Sprould.Beyond countries we look at multi-national corporations with Gareth Johnston from “We mean busi

As an old man we see him dismayed by the attacks of climate sceptics and deniers. The panel at Transitions Film Festival discuss this in terms of cuts to the CSIRO and the climate science that would keep us safe.Caroline Ingvarson won a prize for her local leadership in Lighter Footprints and we celebrate the achievements of her climate action group.Guests:Dr Malte Meinshausen - Director, Australian-German College, The University of MelbourneDr Liz Connor - Founder, Climate GuardiansVictoria McKenzie-McHarg - Climate Campaign Manager, Australian Conservation FoundationKate Auty - Vice Chancellor's Fellow, The University of MelbourneCaroline Ingvarson - Lighter FootprintsKaterina Gaita .
