There are two kinds of vocabularies that we all acquire in time, no matter whether it’s your native language or a foreign language. The first and more obvious one is the active vocabulary. These are the words we use when we speak or write. On the other hand, there’s the passive vocabulary. And these are all the words we understand when we read or listen. Let me make myself clear: You fully understand the meaning of these words; you don’t just guess their meaning when you read or listen. However, you can’t use them in a conversation. In this episode: I’ll be talking about passive listening, or in other words, listening in the background. After that, we’ll practice conversation skills with the powerful Question & Answer technique. Ok, let’s get started! In the language industry, there’s an appealing approach called the passive listening. This means playing some English in the background while performing other tasks. You just need to play some English while you’re cleaning, writing, surfing the Internet, etc. Well, although this approach may be appealing to many of you, here’s the bad news: It doesn’t work as a whole system for developing a complete fluency in English. The main drawback is that when we need to learn new content, our brain needs to pay attention, to be active. So, in an ideal world, we would be 100% focused all

10/04/2017 Duração: 09minHi everyone! I’m Georgiana; founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help YOU speak English fluently. In this episode: I’m going to talk about the relationship among reading, writing, speaking and listening. After that, I’m going to tell you a Point of View Story. Let’s get started! As a language student, the main activities to learn a new language are: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is what we naturally do in our mother tongue. One key aspect to keep in mind is that we can categorize these activities as input and output. As you may guess, listening and reading are input activities, and writing and speaking are output activities. In other words, when you’re listening or reading, you are being exposed to the language, and when you’re writing and speaking, you are “producing” the language. In this episode, I will be talking about how many times we have to repeat an audio material in English. After that, you practice your conversation skills with a new mini-story. Ok, let’s get started! As you may know, I always recommend you to listen to improve your English speaking. There are many studies, which suggest that there is a correlation between our level of the language and the hours we have been listening. In other words, the more you listen, the better. The more hours you spend listening, the quicker you improve. Here’s an interesting question you might ask: “How many times do I have to listen to every piece of content?” Do I have to listen just one time? Or more than that? What most students do is listen to certain content once or twice and then change to another material. The typical student thinks that the more variety, the better. Well, variety is
