Manga Mavericks EP. 187: "Letterers Roundtable"
30/01/2022 Duração: 03h57minTake the Manga Mavericks 2021 Podcast Survey and get entered into our FREE MANGA giveaway! Click the link to take the survey and listen to the show for details! - https://s.surveyplanet.com/1m409qcf We all know manga is translated from japanese to english, but do you ever think about how the actual text is placed on the page, and who places it there? It doesn’t magically appear out of thin air - manga letterers are the folks responsible for putting the words you read on the page, which is not always an easy task, as lettering is more than just fitting words into a balloon, which is hard enough in of itself, but requires creativity and ingenuity to replicate the feel of the original text with creative solutions and hand-drawn effects, and even cleaning, touching up, and redrawing the original art! We’ve had several manga Letterers on the show to discuss their work before, but today is an especially red-letter day, because we’ve brought on a dream team, some of the best in the business, to spell out what a

Lum Squad #10: "You "Only You" Once"
20/12/2021 Duração: 01h48minHello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! It’s time for I, I, You, and I to review the Urusei Yatsura: Only You! We’re so excited to finally have the films streaming on Crunchyroll and coming to blu-ray courtesy of Discotek, and so we’ll be periodically interrupting our coverage of the manga to review each movie! What better occasion to start than on our 10th episode AND just ahead of the upcoming blu-ray release of Only You coming later this month! We’re starting off with the series’s first movie, Only You, a much-beloved crowd-pleaser that director Mamoru Oshii was loath to make! While clearly a love-letter to the series, do we agree with Oshii that it’s more of an extended episode than a “real film?” We discuss the fascinatingly fraught production history of Only You, analyze Elle as a parallel to both Lum and Ataru, describe the multitude of references and callbacks to the s

#Lum Squad #09: "Doesn't Anyone Here Love Each Other?"
30/11/2021 Duração: 01h43minHello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! Our discussion on Urusei Yatsura Volume 10 was so long we had to split it up across multiple recordings for different parts! This discussion is an interesting mix of different recordings in of itself, because we had originally discussed the first two chapters in this episode, the “Love Letter Trouble” two-parter, at the tail end of our previous recording that you heard in our last episode, and our discussion of the remaining chapters in the volume was split down the middle into two different recordings because of an audio mishap on AC’s end that froze his Audacity during our discussion of the “Lover Thief” two-parter. All this to say that this episode is still kind of a weird frankenstein of different recordings, which is why you may hear some differences in the audio during different parts of it. That said, I think the sum of these part

#Lum Squad #08: "Chain of Memories"
18/11/2021 Duração: 01h29minHello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We’ve entered the double-digits of Urusei Yatsura’s omnibus volumes, and to mark the occasion we’re mixing up our format for covering the manga from here on out. Our past couple of volume discussions have run so long that from here on out we’ll be splitting our discussions of the omnibuses into two separate episodes as opposed to one big long one, which we hope will help us edit and release episodes more reliably and regularly! We’re starting off our coverage of the 10th omnibus today with a collection of stories that deal with summertime and memories! Tune in as we explore some fishy stories involving a love triangle between a pool ghoul, blowfish, and a shark, a jellyfish in a can jam, and learning to swim like your life depends on it! Plus we take a stroll down memory lane while reliving Sakura’s childhood by playing with monsters, R

Manga Mavericks EP. 182: Parasyte
17/11/2021 Duração: 02h27minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, as well past manga editor and game creator, Jason Thompson, to discuss Hitoshi Iwaaki's classic manga, Parasyte! A sci-fi, horror, action story about a teenager named Shinichi, who's body is almost taken over by a parasitic creature, but stops it just before it reaches his brain causing it to only take over his left hand. Shinichi and his new parasite companion, Migi, figure out how to coexist together as they attempt to hide Migi's existence from other people while also coming in contact with other parasites! We discuss this horrifying but silly series, as we touch on how Iwaaki explores things like grief, trauma and even environmentalism?! We also discuss what we think of the 2014 anime from Madhouse, as well as just how far the manga's availability has come in the US since the first time it was licensed by Tokyopop! If you liked this discussion, join us next week when cover both Parasyte anthology coll

#Lum Squad #07: "The Miss Tomobiki Contest!"
12/11/2021 Duração: 02h45minHello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We've officially hit the halfway point of the Urusei Yatsura manga! The series' ninth omnibus is a fantastic collection of stories, a real showcase of the manga in its prime! Perhaps no storyline best demonstrates this than the series' longest and most ambitious story arc to date - The Miss Tomobiki Contest! A mini-tournament arc featuring the badass beauties of the series facing off against each other and wild animals, this storyline is an awesome and hilarious mix of character gags and action-comedy, and another step towards the style of storytelling Takahashi would employ later in Ranma 1/2! But while The Miss Tomobiki Contest is definitely the main event, this volume is also jam-packed with a ton of other great and memorable stories, including the origins of Mendo's claustrophobia, the revenge of Galactic Teacher CAO-2, the identity

Manga Mavericks EP. 181: November 2021 News & Simulpub Roundups!
09/11/2021 Duração: 01h40minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum once again report on and discuss the latest in manga news with new series, what new manga licenses they're looking forward to, as well new anime films coming to the US! Particular topics include our thoughts on what's been happening in Fire Force recently, a beloved(?) Fist of the North Star character getting their own isekai manga, and our thoughts on the first chapter of Nio Nakatani's newest manga, God Bless the Mistaken, the newest simulpub from Yen Press! Note from Colton: So the day after this episode of the podcast was fully edited, it was announced that both Zero's Tea Time and The Culprit Hanzawa (Hannin no Hanzawa) had been picked up by Netflix! So I'm just making note of that here since I didn't have time to mention it in the episode after the fact. Manga Mavericks EP. 180: GeGeGe no Kitaro
03/11/2021 Duração: 02h57minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by Eisner award winning comics artist, Joey Weiser, Twitter extraordinaire and horror enthusiast, Casey "MinovskyArticle", as well as translator and yokai expert, Zack Davisson, to discuss Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitaro manga! We discuss not only our thoughts on the comic in general, but as well as the life of Shigeru Mizuki and how his works have truly influenced Japanese culture as a whole! Disclaimer: A gosh darn audio yokai came in while we were recording and messed up some of Zack's audio, which means that some of it was so inaudible that parts of our conversation had to be cut, but we hope you enjoy the episode anyway! #Lum Squad #06: "Ryunosuke 1/2"
03/11/2021 Duração: 02h06minHello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! Rising up like a tidal wave and roaring like a dragon, Ryuunosuke Fujinami has finally arrived! At long last, english manga fans finally get to meet the last and arguably most important member of Urusei Yatsura's main cast - a manly girl who yearns to be feminine whose character and stories bear no small resemblance to Rumiko Takahashi's later work, Ranma 1/2! We discuss Ryuunosuke's significance as an early gender non-conforming female character in Rumiko Takahashi's work, as well as the trans-feminine and queer subtext in her characterization and storylines. We debate both the positive and negatives of Ryuunosuke as queer representation and how she fares against queer rep and subtext in Takahashi's later works. We also dig into what makes her a compelling character and why Takahashi seemed particularly fond of her, to the point she ov

Manga Mavericks EP. 177: "LGBTQ Manga"
17/10/2021 Duração: 02h54minQueer manga should be read and celebrated all year round, and thanks to the growing efforts of publishers to bring more great LGBTQ titles over west, it’s easier than ever to find works that speak to you! We’ve taken pride in covering many great LGBTQ manga on our show over the years, and for the longest time I’ve wanted to do a broader topic discussion centered around queer manga. So I decided to take our exploration through the world of queer manga in steps and start from a personal place; what queer manga means to us as queer readers, and our evolving histories with them. Joining me for this discussion are some wonderful guests who’ve specialized in exploring media through a queer lens, examing representation in media and spotlighting queer media in their work - Trevor & Alex from the Queering the Guilotine podcast and Karleen from the blog CoherentCats! We discuss the works that we feel helped us discover ourselves, best represent the queer community, and are promising signs of progress in the ways

Manga Mavericks EP. 175: My Hero Academia: SMASH!!
28/09/2021 Duração: 02h17minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, we invite on Kendra from the My Hero Academia Podcast, as well as Luke from Hero Notes and the Weird Science Manga & Anime Podcast to discuss My Hero Academia: SMASH!! A 4 panel gag comedy spin off of My Hero Academia where almost anything can happen! Like Shigaraki and the League of Villains kidnaping Bakugo to play board games, or Iida playing Gacha games in order to teach his fellow classmates the horrors of gambling addiction, or even introducing a character with a quirk called Isekai that causes the world to stay stuck in time forever (yes, that actually happens). We discuss this mixed bag of gags and goofs and how its a good avenue to give some characters more screen time, but also how some strips and jokes just absolutely do not land or are just plain gross. Is this the worst thing we've ever read on Manga Mavericks!? Tune in and find out! Manga Mavericks EP. 173: Oumagadoki Zoo
14/09/2021 Duração: 03h14minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, not only do we have another Jump Stop series to talk about, but we also kick off the start of our Kohei Horikoshi month by talking about his first series to run in Weekly Shonen Jump, Oumagadoki Zoo! We once again have returning guests such as cancelled Shonen Jump comic expert, Maxy Barnard, and manga letterer, Ace Christman, as well as new guest and artist extraordinaire, Sai, to discuss why Oumagadoki Zoo is a fun read despite how Horikoshi still has a long way to go as a mangaka until his eventual rise to success with My Hero Academia!
