Manga Mavericks @ Movies #23: No Game No Life Zero
28/11/2018 Duração: 01h05minWe're getting into the home stretch of hitertho unreleased Manga Mavericks @ Movies episodes from 2017! From this point onwards each podcast will contain an hour-long+ review of a single movie. These next couple episodes will be focused on anime movie reviews, including one of the few @ Movies we've actually recorded this year. Afterwards we'll have a few episodes dedicated to superhero blockbusters from last year, all of which featuring our good friend Vix and will hopefully be timed to release alongside some relevant superhero blockbusters coming out in December! Will we actually be able to clear our backlog of 2017 episodes by the end of this year so we can start fresh in 2019? Either way, we're getting into some really good episodes, so look forward to listening to them! On this episode, we talk about No Game No Life Zero, the prequel film to No Game No Life that adapts its sixth volume and was released in North American theatres in October 2017 by Sentai Filmworks. Both Lum and VLord were big fans of N

Manga Mavericks EP 67: Stealth Symphony
23/11/2018 Duração: 01h25minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, while Lum is away, Colton (despite the undisclosed amount of food he had during Thanksgiving) manages to record with good friend and frequent contributor, Maxy Barnard, as they both take a look at Ryohgo Narita & Yoichi Amano's Stealth Symphony, as apart of their ongoing series of cancelled Shonen Jump manga podcasts! Colton is floored by some of Narita's twists and curve balls revealed in the back half of the story, while Maxy struggles to figure out whether one mediocre story arc determines his overall enjoyment of the series or not, just as it may have with readers back in the day. Stealth Symphony is quite the wild ride, so Colton and Maxy talk about everything they can about what might be the most dense, short-lived Jump manga ever made! Enjoy! PODCAST BREAKDOWN 0:00:00 - Intro 0:03:14 - Discussion: Stealth Symphony 0:05:04 - Background (Release, Ryohgo Narita, Yoichi Amano) 0:11:30 - Synopsis/Review 1:08:28 - Overall Ratings/Would We Recommend? 1:11:45 - Where

Manga Mavericks EP. 65: We Support Kohske
09/11/2018 Duração: 01h55minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, its time once again (as much as we try and avoid it) for another news episode, but to spice things up, we're joined once again by our lovable, chicken hating friend from Friendship Effort Victory, Maxy Barnard, as we discuss GANGSTA. author Kohske's recent outcry on Twitter against scanlations of her work and how we feel about people's responses to her tweets, as well as manga piracy in general. Other topics and news pieces we discuss on this episode include Maxy's excitement over new things coming from Grand Jump, the new Goku balloon being featured in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, and the announcement of a live action Hollywood Attack on Titan movie! Manga Mavericks @ Movies #22: Black Butler and Fairy Tail
08/11/2018 Duração: 01h14minSo, what are we reviewing this week on @ Movies? Weird live-action adaptations of anime franchises? Boring/offensive historical films set in the U.K.? Visually inventive and emotionally poignant french animated films? Maybe some more Oscar-nominated animated films that will make VLord rant about how the Oscars are bullshit and how much he hates Disney again? No, on this episode of Manga Mavericks @ Movies we review...anime movies? Whoa, who would have thunk that the Manga Mavericks would review anime films on their movie podcast? How bizarre. But yes, for the first time in over a dozen episodes we're actually reviewing honest-god anime films on the show. Well, we released the Kabaneri review a few weeks ago, but this time both films on this episode are anime films. That's not where their simmilarities end either. Both are A-1 pictures film adaptations of popular long-running shonen franchises that were licensed and released in U.S. theatres by FUNimation in the summer of 2017, with Black Butler screening to

Manga Mavericks EP. 64: Haruhi Solves Math!
06/11/2018 Duração: 53minANOTHER NEWS EPISODE?! NOOOOOO!!!! Yes, circumstances have conspired to rob us of a topic this week. Sadly, the Yu Yu Hakusho podcast we planned is on indefinite hiatus. We recorded a great show, but one of our guests' audio was lost to the ether, and trying to gather the gang back together to rerecord it is too difficult right now with our competing schedules. Fear not, for we will not abandon doing a Yu Yu Hakusho-related podcast completely! We intend to record a Yu Yu Hakusho MANGA FIGHT sometime in the coming weeks to make up for the lost show. With any luck it'll be recorded and released before the end of the year! As for this episode, while we may not have a discussion topic, we're making up for it by introducing a new segments - Community Shout-Outs! From now on at the end of every show we'll shine a spotlight on art, videos, blogs, podcasts, and other content created by the Anime fan community that we really enjoyed and want to share. This week we're spotlighting two great podcasts from One Panel La

Manga Mavericks @ Movies #21: Loving Vincent and Coco
31/10/2018 Duração: 01h02minWelcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the only movie podcast that releases what was supposed to be last year's Thanksgiving special on Halloween! I mean hey, you can argue these films also fit the Halloween spirit. I mean, Coco is about skeletal ghosts and the underworld and Loving Vincent is a murder-mystery thriller. They fit the aesthetic and mood, I think. Well, as you can tell, this week we're discussing Loving Vincent and Coco, two of the Best Animated Picture contenders at last year's Academy Awards! Those who've listened to our Oscars podcast from earlier this year should already know our general opinions of these films, and our full reviews of these features go more in-depth into what makes them so artistically excellent! Until VLord starts ranting about why he hates Disney and why the Oscars' Best Animated Feature award is rigged in their favor denying accolades to far superior films. Things get so heated that at one point VLord threatens to quit the podcast! Hey, maybe this podcast is scary

Manga Mavericks EP. 63: MHA: Two Heroes and All Might Rising
27/10/2018 Duração: 01h40minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, after being delayed for three weeks, its finally time to talk some My Hero Academia! Colton and Lum discuss their experiences seeing My Hero Academia: Two Heroes in theaters, with Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory listening and becoming increasing jealous of the American cinema and their giant pretzels and nostalgic throwback screenings. Other topics of discussion include our thoughts on the All Might Rising prequel chapter, the blatant movie advertisement that is Episode 58 of the anime, as well as our thoughts on the English dub of the anime. Not, not anime, but some really great and underrated french flicks - My Life as a Zucchini and Mune: Guardian of the Moon! Both films were licensed by GKIDS and given limited theatrical screenings in 2017, and Zucchini was even an Oscar contender! Manga Mavericks EP 62: Yet Another News Episode...
22/10/2018 Duração: 46minGOSH DARN IT I THOUGHT WE WERE DONE WITH THESE?! Yes, this is yet another news-only episode, but nevermind that - WORLD TRIGGER IS COMING BACK!!! After two long years, it's finally returning to the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump on October 29th. You can catch yourselves up on the series before it returns by reading through the entirety of the B-Rank Wars arc (over 80 chapters - more than half the series!) on Viz.com until October 31st! For an even deeper refresher, you can also listen to the lengthy World Trigger podcasts we did earlier this year! But as much as we want to gush about World Trigger's return, we've got other news to discuss as well, including Kazuki Takahashi's new series for Weekly Shonen Jump, new digital licenses by Media Do and Kodansha, and MHA: Two Heroes' final box-office tally among other recent news highlights on this episode of the show! Speaking of MHA: Two Heroes, our review of the film with Maxy Barnard should be out later this week, alongside a few other podcasts hinted in this epi

Manga Mavericks EP 61: Teenage Renaissance David/I'm From Japan
15/10/2018 Duração: 50minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, we only meet halfway on the promises of last episode as we don't just record another news only episode, but didn't have time to release all of what was promised. The good news is that we have another great Jump Start discussion with good friend of the show, Maxy Barnard, of Friendship Effort Victory! As we discuss the beginning chapters of two new gag manga in Weekly Shonen Jump entitled Teenage Renaissance David and I'm From Japan! Are these the two new additions to Jump's lineup that will satisfy Maxy's desperate need for comedy in Jump, or will they be two series doomed to capture the audience's (as well as Colton's) attention and fail? Join us next time as we discuss some My Hero Academia goodness including our thoughts on the All Might Rising prequel chapter, as well as our experience seeing Two Heroes in theaters! Until then, enjoy the episode! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Intro 03:13 - Teenage Renaissance David 22:48 - I'm From Japan 45:47 - Wrap-up Enjoy the sho

@ Movies #19: Kabaneri, Guardians, and My Entire High School
07/10/2018 Duração: 41minThis week we're continuing to dig through our backlog of unreleased episodes to finally deliver you guys one of the oldest in our archive! Back in May 2017 we recorded an episode of @ Movies discussing three very different films that we'd seen between late April to early May - the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress compilation films, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, & My Entire High School is Sinking Into the Sea! These three films don't have anything in common other than we saw them around the same time and decided to record about them on the same audio file, but hey, variety is the spice of life! So, did we enjoy the Kabaneri compilations more than its regular tv cut? Is Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 a worthy follow-up to Marvel's breakout sci-fi comedy? What even is My Entire High School is Sinking Into the Sea about? No kidding, I have no clue! Find out the answers to these questions and more in this long overdue episode of Manga Mavericks @ Movies! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mave

Manga Mavericks EP. 60: Not Another News Episode!
05/10/2018 Duração: 46minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, what was supposed to be an episode discussing the latest Jump Starts from Shonen Jump and My Hero Academia goodness with Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory, turned out to be another news episode again! We promise you'll get to hear that discussion next time, but in the meantime, we have plenty of news to keep us busy! Including unfortunate news for Yusuke Murata's Back To The Future manga, another tidal wave of licenses from Seven Seas, and just how well My Hero Academia: Two Heroes has been doing at the box office! We PROMISE we'll have a non-news episode next time, but enjoy a shorter episode until then! @ Movies #18: Dunkirk, Kingsman, and Victoria & Abdul
30/09/2018 Duração: 01h24minWelcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the only movie podcast that waits over a year after recording to release an episode! Well, 2018 is almost over and I still have 13 episodes of @ Movies recorded in 2017 I still haven't released, so let's see if I can get at least some of those out before the year is up. We're starting off with a triple threat of British-based films this week as LumRanmaYasha and VLordGTZ talk about Dunkirk, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Victoria & Abdul. Yes, literally the only reason these reviews are paired together in this episode is that they are all about British people and characters so I thought I'd lump them together. Still, as tenuous the thread connecting these films is, each review is quite a lot of fun with some great jokes throughout, so I'll think you'll have a good time! Did we think Dunkirk deserved to win Best Sound Design at the Oscars? Was Kingsman: The Golden Circle really that bad a sequel? Was Victoria & Abdul a disgustingly offensive whitewashing of h

Manga Mavericks EP. 59: The (Now Named) Nameless Man
24/09/2018 Duração: 01h22minANOTHER news-only episode?! What is this, 2016? Don't worry folks, we'll have series to cover and topics to discuss very soon! We've been listening to your feedback and we'll be implementing some changes that we think you'll be really happy with starting from the next episode onwards. We're committed to bringing on more guests and talking about more than shonen series, not just other manga, but discussion-forum episodes on important topics that deserve a thorough dialogue. We've got a lot of plans, and here's hoping we'll be able to follow through on some of them before the year's out! For now, it's just the two of us and the news, but it's quite a crop of news! We've got an MHA-dominated Bookscan list, new simulpubs at Crunchyroll, a Promised Neverland character popularity poll, and a whole lot more to cover! Listen and be entertained as Colton tries to blindly guess who the top ten most popular Promised Neverland characters are after not having read the series for a couple months. He didn't even know the

Manga Mavericks EP. 58: Sexism in the Manga Industry and More
06/09/2018 Duração: 01h58sOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, its time for another news episode since we didn’t have a topic planned for the week, though unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of very especially good news as we go over some recent accounts of sexism from artists in the industry, how many manga magazines have ended so far this year and the recent passing of the creator of Chibi Maruko-chan, Momoko Sakura. We also have our usual bit of news on different serializations and movie and anime news, as well as LumRanmaYasha’s thoughts on the recent announcement of Crunchyroll’s High Guardian Spice as well as the controversy that has formed around it. It's an unfortunately low energy, but actually short episode of the podcast at least! Manga Mavericks EP. 57: Bakuman
26/08/2018 Duração: 03h45minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, we’re joined by One Piece Podcast contributor and writer for Anime News Network, Sam Leach, as well All Comic contributor, Nick Rowe, as we discuss Bakuman from Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata! We cover all sorts of bases during our discussion from what Bakuman meant to some of us as young readers as an in-depth look at the behind the scenes of what goes into creating Shonen Jump manga, to its unfortunate unchallenged depiction of sexism in the industry. Listen to the episode to find out how well Bakuman holds up 10 years after its debut! We also discuss our usual helping of news including My Hero Academia continuing to dominate half of North American manga sales, Gintama finally coming to an end, and even some new publishers making their way into the market! Enjoy!! Manga Mavericks EP. 56: HOT (Akira Amano)
10/08/2018 Duração: 01h41minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, we were going to be talking about Shaman King, but instead we’ll be talking about HOT, the newest one shot by Akira Amano (Reborn, elDLIVE) from Weekly Shonen Jump! With Colton and Sid not being very familiar with Amano’s past works, will HOT convince them to start diving into her bibliography, or will they only feel cold towards it? We also have some news to discuss beforehand, such as ICV2’s top 10 manga franchises of Spring 2018, more new digital titles from Kodansha, and David Pro’s Captain Tsubasa anime getting an English dub on a TV channel that (probably) nobody has! Manga Mavericks EP. 55: Seiji Tanaka + Alice and Taiyo
03/08/2018 Duração: 01h21minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, we dedicate an entire episode to the latest round of Jump Starts recently featured in Viz Media’s Weekly Shonen Jump! Including the action packed, time travelling adventures of Seiji Tanaka: Secretary to the Managing President, General Time Industries from Keiji Amatsuka, as well as the musical, coming of age story of Alice & Taiyo from Takahide Totsuno. We also discuss Tite Kubo’s latest one-shot, Burn The Witch, and Food Wars creators Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki’s take on One Piece with Shokugeki no Sanji!! Topics of discussion from Colton and Sid include which of the two newest Jump Starts they’d like to see more of, the flaws of Kubo’s general storytelling, and why Shokugeki no Sanji is such a breath of fresh air for Sanji as a character. Enjoy!
