Today’s expression and dialog:  to give someone the benefit of the doubt Where’s Mark? He’s late. He said he got a flat tire. And you believed him. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.   I really do NOT like when people PROMISE to do something for me and then they don't do it AND LIE! Not doing a promise, that can happen. But just tell me the truth. You forgot OR you were busy OR you didn't want to OR you didn't know how...but don't lie to me. Don't say, "My um...my grandmother was ill and I had to take care of her because she was really sick and I love my grandmother...BLAH BLAH BLAH..."However, you know, sometimes that "lie" is actually TRUE! So...sometimes we need to "trust" people. Today’s expression and dialog:  grab a nap Is there anything else you need? No, nothing. Thanks. Okay. I’m gonna go grab a nap. Sleep well^^   I usually go to be very late--2 or 3 am. And I do my best to wake up by 8 am. But, after I eat lunch...I am SO tired. So, I use Today's Expression!! By the way, right now I am ON THE ROAD! I am driving to Chicago. Today’s expression and dialog:  to sugarcoat SMT So, how’d you like my poem? Well…it was nice. Come on! Don’t sugarcoat it! Tell me. Um… Don’t quit your day job.   So, a little girl was sitting next to me at the coffee shop yesterday. She was about 4. She was drawing a picture. While she was drawing, she kept looking at me. After a few minutes, she said, "Here!" and she gave me her picture. I had NO IDEA what she made. I thought it was a monster or maybe a dog... Then she told me, "It's you! Do you like it?" I told her, "This is the WORST drawing I have ever seen. You are a terrible artist." OF COURSE I DIDN'T SAY THAT! I said, "Oh, wow! I really love my hair! Thank you!!" And she was very happy. Actually, I did like the hair she drew. It was a lot of hair! But did I lie to her? Yuck~ It can’t be that bad!   Right now I am getting ready to MOVE to Chicago! So, my house is a disaster! I've got books and clothes and boxes EVERYWHERE. If a rat came into my home, it might leave because it is TOO dirty!!! Today’s expression and dialog:  flickering Do you have a minute? What do you need? The light in my room is flickering. I’ll change it for you.   Do you have fluorescent lights? You know, those LONG lights that are usually in ceiling lights at school and libraries and offices...well, I have two in my kitchen. And one of them was making me GO CRAZY!! It would be perfectly bright, then suddenly, it would go dark...then it would be bright dark bright dark bright dark bright dark... I would HIT it. And it would be fine. This occurred for about two months. But finally, the other day, I replaced the light! I now love my kitchen again!! WHAT WORD can we use for a light that is ABOUT to die? Today’s expression and dialog:  pull your weight Oh, no. Is John on our team? Yeah, why? He never pulls his weight! Really? He seems like a hard worker.   I am REALLY lucky to work with a few people who make my job MUCH easier. I need to thank Miguel who is my right hand man! He helps me manage our students. Max is my website GENIUS! He can do anything. And Santa is an amazing website designer and she manages our book club. Each of those people do SO much. And I can't forget Clive and Matt, too. They are FACE-TO-FACE with my students almost everyday helping them with pronunciation and questions~ Each of these people ABSOLUTELY "

Today’s expression and dialog:  under my belt    I’m a beginner, but can I join DDM? Well, once you get my Daily Dictation videos under your belt, then you can join. How much are those lessons? How much? They’re free!   The MORE you do something, the better you can become. As long as you have someone guiding you. If you repeat something WRONG...you will always be wrong!! Make sure, no matter WHAT you are doing, that you always have someone who can give you GOOD feedback. Someone that can help you. Today’s expression and dialog:  lay it on me  Do you have time now? Oh, right. Your new idea. Lay it on me. Well, I think you should make a better website. Ugh! I know! It’s urgent~~   Sometimes you are NOT ready to listen to someone. You want to, but you are too busy. That person might be your wife/husband, child, employee, boss, teacher, friend...it could be anyone. BUT YOU ARE BUSY!!! The only thing you can really say is, "Please, not right now." However, eventually you are ready to listen...and then you can use today's expression!!
