26/03/2021 Duração: 43minIt's less than a week until Opening Day! Am I doing my hair toss and checking my nails? Because I'm feeling good as hell! All in all, not a bad offseason for Matthew's team--and he's looking forward to that moment just after first pitch when it sinks in that everyone's work has all come together to make another baseball season happen. One that's going to be historic for (hopefully) all

3 Strikes, You're Out #67: Glenn Burke's Legacy with Andrew Maraniss
19/03/2021 Duração: 43minThis week, I wrote a review of a wonderful new Glenn Burke biography called Singled Out. It's the most comprehensive examination to date of the life and times of the first openly gay player in MLB history and the numerous difficulties he faced during his all too brief career. On today's pod, I'm joined by Singled Out's author Andrew Maraniss to examine Burke's trailblazing legacy and the tragedies he endured in order to be true to himself in the conservative and close-minded world of late-70s baseball. Andrew recounts the incredible impact Burke made on teammates who embodied a range of personality types from Dusty Baker's coolness to Steve Garvey's "wholesome" image consciousness. We also discuss Burke's bravery in living an open gay life as a celebrity in San Francisco's Castro District at the same time Dodgers management did everything possible to keep it under wraps. Finally, Maraniss details the many prominent moments of post-Stonewall LGBTQ history that intersected with Burke's career. It's a fascinatin

3 Strikes, You're Out #66: Yankee Optimism with Chris Calogero
12/03/2021 Duração: 37minLet's face it...the Yankees are going to be real good in 2021. You're probably not happy about this. After all, you have a soul. So as a public service, I'm welcoming back friend of the pod and nicest damn Yankee fan on the planet Chris Calogero to talk about his team heading into the upcoming season. The Yanks playing well makes Chris happy like few things outside of Bruce Springsteen volunteering to be his own personal dog walker. And if Chris is happy, the rest of us should feel a little better. Weirdly, today's episode sounds an awful lot like the discussion we had about last year's team. Are they going to have enough starters behind Gerrit Cole? Will any of those starters have functioning arms by June? Can the hitters strike out a little less when it matters most? Will this agonizing eleven year championship drought ever end? OK, now you really hate the Yankees again. I don't blame you.
