No boycott. Why participating in the Olympics is a better idea than staying home - Five Rings To Rule Them All
19/04/2021 Duração: 24minThere's lots of chatter today about boycotts. When Major League Baseball decided to pull its 2021 All Star Game out of Atlanta, some people cheered while others jeered. This week we look at various conversations about sports boycotts from the past, including the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2015 Men's Final Four in Indianapolis. And we look ahead to calls for boycotting the 2022 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, while contrasting that with the quieter calls to boycott the Tokyo Olympic Games over LGBTQ and other human rights issues. 3 Strikes, You're Out #71: Angels on the Podcast with Jim Allen
16/04/2021 Duração: 48minThe Los Angeles Angels are an enigma. For one thing, they insist on being called the Los Angeles Angels despite the fact that they clearly play in Anaheim. No Angeleno ever says, "Well sure, the San Gabriels are nice...but have you seen SPLASH MOUNTAIN?" Today, I'm joined by Angels superfan Jim Allen to talk about his team's most perplexing conundrum: the Angels have the consensus best player in baseball in Mike Trout. They have the most exciting player in baseball in Shohei Ohtani. They have the most fascinating manager in baseball in Joe Maddon. And come June every season, they have no chance. How does this happen? Jim has a few ideas and they're called Arte Moreno and Mike Scioscia. We also reminisce about the joy of 2002 and the heartbreak of 1986. And finally, Jim tells an important story about what it was like to be a gay man who had an ambition to break into broadcasting in the 1970s and 80s. 3 Strikes, You're Out #70: No ASG for the ATL with D.Gil
09/04/2021 Duração: 40minNext week on April 15th, MLB will be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. And they'll be doing so after taking a social justice stand that Jackie Robinson would have supported for the first time in...*checks notes*...ever? Today, friend of the pod and Outsports Podcast Network cohort D.Gil (The Gameday Tea) is back to talk about MLB moving the All Star Game out of Atlanta in response to Georgia's new voter suppression laws. It's a very important discussion because D.Gil comes at this issue from the perspective of both a Black and gay Atlanta native as well as a former Braves gameday employee. And we break down what moving the All Star Game means as a public rebuke of a racist law and how it effects the people who depend on baseball to make a day-to-day living. After digging into that very weighty topic, we lighten the mood a bit by overreacting to the Braves' season opening four game losing streak. They'll be fine! And I even find a way to work in a discussion of Love, Simon--perhaps my favorite thing to come out

3 Strikes, You're Out #69: 2021 Season Preview with Away Games Podcast
02/04/2021 Duração: 51minThe 2021 Season is officially underway! So I guess I'd better get to previewing it... It's time for 3SYO's annual crossover pod with Kevin McCaffrey and Adam Mamawala of the Away Games Podcast! As per tradition, we took an in depth look at the 2021 Cubs on Kevin and Adam's show (Click here to listen!) and on today's episode, we're examining the rest of the MLB landscape. Over the next 50 minutes, the three of us dive into the burgeoning Dodgers/Padres rivalry, ponder whether Tony LaRussa's douchebaggery is powerful enough to sink the White Sox juggernaut, toast Juan Soto's dominance, and mull over which team possesses the most compelling postseason drought. Plus, we make our yearly fearless predictions at the end of the show. Last year, I bravely went out on a limb and guessed the Dodgers would win the World Series. As for this year's prediction? Let's just say that Outsports Podcast Network colleague D.Gil is going to consider this a must-listen. Play Ball! Extend Rizzo! Twitter: @KenSchultz_ @KevinMcCaff @A
